Koh Rong must be the new inspiration for movies like The Beach – It is beautiful, secluded, and completely stole my heart.
The only other place where I’ve had the pleasure of walking on such white sand with deeply greenish-blue water was in Hamilton Island, Australia. I have to say, that was a slightly more costly place to get to and stay than Koh Rong happens to be.
Take a look for yourself. This island is truly magical:
Then there’s the even less-visited Rabbit Island (Koh Tonsay), just a 20-minute boat ride away from Kep, Cambodia.
Famous for crab and peppercorns, this area is somewhat less touristy but packs just as much beauty:
Have you ever been to either island? What did you think?

Um I hate my life. This is SO beautiful. I think Alex from Alex in Wanderland went here too.

Would make sense given she’s a diver too!
Alexa Hart says
Beautiful! Reminds me a little of the remote island of Koh Kradan in Thailand.
Ava Apollo says
OOohh I’ll have to add that to my list!

Koh Tonsay was nice, just a few other people on the island. Great way to spend a day. Short, 40 minute, boat ride from Kep

Where did you stay on Koh Rong? I’m headed to Thailand and Cambodia for five weeks and would love some input! 🙂
Kristin says
I stayed at the staff dorms in a dive shop since I was working with them at the time but A LOT has changed since I was there.

We are trying to decide between Koh rang OR Koh Chang. Which has nicer beaches? 🙂
Kristin says
Both are nice but I bet Koh Chang will be less crowded.

Koh Chang and Koh Rong are completely different islsnds. Koh Chang is way more developed with roads, supermarket and the normal tourism infrastructure. The nicest beach in the island you’ll find near White Sand Beach Resort on the futhest part of White Sand Beach. If your looking for a backpacker party beach then Lonely beach is the place to go. But the beach ain’t fantastic. A short boat ride from koh Chang you’ll find tropical paradise islands- all great for a day trip. Koh Rong on the other hand is way more basic (for now- Chinese developers are planning on building big resorts:( ) The beach near Sok San village is magical. The sand is like white powder and the sea is crystal clear. Accommodation is very basic but nothing beats the location right on the beach. There are a few restaurants and very simple shops in the area and the locals in the village are very friendly. The vibe is very chilled and don’t expect any late night partying here. In the other side of koh Rong you’ll find
