I watched the long grasses sway and beat-up busses pass by on the road as I sat, backpack next to me, on a bus bound to Koh Chang in Thailand. As much as I appreciated being back in Thailand for a 6th time, and though I knew I’d be meeting up with friends upon my arrival, I couldn’t help but feel simultaneously excited and really tired.
“I think my backpacking days are behind me,” I said quietly to myself.
This was last May, and one week later I would have a summer in a flat in Berlin with clean water, friends I would be able to see again and again, and a place to call home, maybe even long-term. I spent two months in Berlin before going home to California for a month, and now I have returned. It’s my adopted new home, that’s for sure.
The autumn has been a really amazing thing to experience. I realized I haven’t seen changing leaves since I was very young. We don’t really get seasons in coastal Southern California nor in Southeast Asia. It’s absolutely beautiful and it turns out I really love this season.
Yet with each passing week now I get more and more random urges to climb somewhere, to feel the warm stickiness of rainforest air on my arms, to dive into clear and warm saltwater several times per day, to get lost again, to be confused, to be fascinated.
I really love Berlin, but it turns out I still love movement as well.
I have started to miss the smells, tastes, chaos, and warmth.
My plan is to stay here through the end of 2015 and have a nice taste of winter and the holidays, then, it’s time to go somewhere completely new.
But I know if left up to me, I’ll never stop visiting Asia. Our love affair runs deep. So instead, in the interest of visiting new places, asked all of my newsletter sucbscribers to tell me where they wanted to read about. I asked, where do you want in-depth knowledge about? Where do you wish to travel to? What would be the most entertaining read for you? A few key places kept getting mention after mention, and they have been put into the following poll.
So let me know, where do you want to travel to and what do you want to read about in 2015? I’ll go there!
